Zonta Breast Care Cushions provide comfort to women in the post-operative phase of breast surgery. Club members and local quilting circles make cushions and drainage bags for use after breast surgery. Cushions and bags are distributed to hospitals on request in both South Australia and the Northern Territory. The Zonta Breast Care Cushion aids recovery by providing comfort when sleeping, to protect against bumps and when wearing seatbelts.
History
The Zonta Club of Sydney had a club member that designed the cushion in 1994 after hearing from a guest speaker about the difficulty of recovering from breast surgery. Her idea was to give post-operative comfort to women and thereby aid their recovery. In 2002, Zonta International District 24 took this up as a District project and District 23 followed suit shortly thereafter. Later on in 2005, District 16 (New Zealand) and countries as diverse as Germany, Canada, the USA and Macedonia have joined in the effort.
Since then, thousands of women around Australia have benefited from this project. Many women find the cushion very comfortable when resting and sleeping; others also wear it under loose fitting outer garments.
